Author Background

Meet Kat Thornley

As of April 2022, I’ve completed my Honours BSc. in Computer Science and, with this project, a minor in Digital Humanities at the University of Ottawa. I started my degree not knowing where it would take me, and am very happy to have found a way to merge my passions for data and art. I’ve always been interested in visual arts and music, but it wasn't until around 14 when I discovered that writing HTML/CSS code for Tumblr blogs could scratch a new artistic itch. Now I focus my technical knowledge from my degree towards contributing to the STEAM movement as a data feminist and designer.

Dr. Jada Watson, a musicology researcher and digital humanities professor at uOttawa has been overseeing my work on this project over the course of 8 months. Dr. Watson has guided me towards exploring texts by authors like Catherine D’Ignazio, Lauren Klein, and David Arditi, while also providing me the opportunity to pick her brain along with those of her colleagues like Charles Alexander, a singer/songwriter and founder of Outside The Box Music.

I am incredibly thankful for the direction this project has lead me in, and for the people who have helped me along the way. Without Dr. Jada Watson’s guidance, understanding, and faith in me, this project would have never come to be. Thank you for your consistent feedback, Tuesday chats, and puppy zoom-cameos, Jada.

I would also like to thank my friends, Hannah Judge and Michael Watson of Ottawa’s Fanclubwallet, for providing me insight into their unique story, ultimately kick-starting this study.
